On the 28th of June 1969, a street battle that lasted several days broke out around a gay bar on Christopher Street in New York, which would go down in history as the Stonewall Riots and marked the visible beginning of the emancipation of queer people, be they gay, lesbian, bi or trans. When the police moved in to arrest the Stonewall guests once again that night, they fought back. A year later, the first Christopher Street Day took place in New York in memory of this event, which is now celebrated all over the world, sometimes as a colourful street carnival, sometimes as a protest rally against continuing discrimination. The documentary focuses less on the events of that time, but rather on what has changed and where we are today.
