They were giants of the seas, their names tell history: Titanic, Imperator, Normandie, United States. They connected the continents, brought emigrants, tourists and the mail: luxurious, reliable, as fast as an arrow. For over 100 years, steamships were the only connection across the Atlantic.
This two-part documentary tells the story of these majestic ships; it tells of the race for prestige and speed, of the rich people in first class and the poor wretches in steerage, of records and disasters - from the proud launching to the scrapping.
